Mouthing, Housetraining & Backyard Breeders

Tip 1: Puppy Mouthing

Puppy mouthing? You’re definitely not alone! Stock up on quality chew toys (we love a classic rubber Kong stuffed with kibble and peanut butter).

When your pup starts treating your hands or feet like chew toys, gently but consistently redirect them to something appropriate.

Chewing is a natural, calming behavior for dogs—so building a healthy chew-toy habit not only saves your skin, it also helps tame those late-night zoomies!

Tip 2: Potty Training

Potty training? Try the Confinement-Opportunity method! Keep your pup in their crate when you’re not actively supervising, and take them out regularly for potty breaks. If they go outside—treat, praise, and pop them back in the crate!

As your pup starts to develop a routine, you can gradually increase their freedom around the house. The key? Don’t give them a chance to make a mistake—and celebrate every outdoor potty like it’s a big deal!

Be consistent, and potty training will be a total breeze.

P.S. Please don’t rub your pup’s nose in their mess if there’s an accident… it doesn’t help and just confuses them.

This Month’s Thought:

Craigslist time!
While I’ve had a few clients bring home well-socialized, lovely dogs from Craigslist, Kijiji, or other online marketplaces, I’ve also seen countless behavioural challenges in dogs purchased from unlicensed, inexperienced, or so-called “backyard” breeders.

The first 12 weeks of a puppy’s life are absolutely critical to its long-term development—shaping how it relates to humans, other dogs, food, and the world around it. If a puppy isn’t raised by someone who truly understands early canine development, it can lead to serious and lasting issues.

So please, be cautious about where you get your puppy. You’ll thank us later!
